Himote House - First Thoughts

Posted on 29 Oct 2018

Three sisters living together in Nakano along with two school friends and a house-cat name Enishi hang out together at Himote House in this CGI comedy. It's a really odd series too, created by someone called "Bouncy", it looks like a poorly animated mobile phone game - even the lip-synch is off and that's bizarre given that this is a Japanese language program and not an English dub! There are lots of oddities in this show in terms of how it's been put together, but the one that really distracted me is the sound of sweeping a floor each character makes when moving their heads. Is it their hair making that sound? And if so, is it made of straw? Utterly bonkers...

The characters are too mundane to go through in too much detail (although that would make this easier to write) but suffice to say all the major archetypes are here - fiery impetuous character, rich girl, serious but odd older sister, the loser in love and so on. Unfortunately the animation is so off-putting and the situations so utterly mundane (they have a sit down discussion about how many times to use a towel - bloody hell...) that I ended up hating everyone. If this were an interactive mobile phone game, I'd set everything to "kill". The script is like something from a JRPG (the Atelier series comes to mind) but with no actual payoff. The laundry conversation ends with the girls showing each other their underwear to see if they'd get mixed up in the wash.

Oh, and they all have super powers, from energy beams to mind reading powers and mimicry, it's all there. And the cat talks because of course it can.

Ironically the best part of the episode was post-credits where the girls design their own Egyptian harem story and act out the parts. The 2D artwork is lovely and the characters sound like real people having a fun conversation, but too little too late you awful anime you!

Ultimately the 12 minutes I spent watching this were terrible. It looks bad, it's dull, and it's the only slice-of-life series that's made me long for death.

Avoid unless you're punishing yourself for something truly dreadful. Bleh.
