The James Cameron produced, Robert Rodriguez Directed anime adaptation of Yukiro Kishito's seminal Alita: Battle Angel has, much like the character herself, overcome the odds and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Alita has grossed $72,452,725 dollars in the US, after opening with a weak $27.8 million on President's Day weekend. Add an international gross to date of $278,088,950, and you have a total so far of over $350 million, a figure thought impossible before the film opened in China on February 22nd. China makes up $64,783,800 of the international figure, with the main markets for the film being South Korea ($16 million), France (£11 million), Russia ($10 million) and the United Kingdom ($10 million).

Word of mouth between cinema-goers and Alita fans has certainly played a part, but the film's incredible visuals coupled with star Rosa Salazar's soulful performance seems to have hit a nerve. If Blu Ray sales are strong (and given fan reaction they almost certainly will be) then a sequel is looking far more likely than even a week ago.
