The popular River City games are making another return with River City Saga: Journey to the West courtesy of Arc System Works.
Based on "Journey to the West", one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, players take control of Kunio as either Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang.
The game looks to be adopting a retro pixel-art presentation, which fits in with the series as a whole. You can see the game in action on the official website.
Also fitting the series lighthearted tone the game describes itself as a wild, exhilarating comedy action adventure.

Following the footsteps of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but taking a different approach, this entry of River City Saga is a solo roguelike action game. Players grow stronger with each run and can obtain Secret Skills to apply to the character they take control of.
River City Series regulars make their appearances one after another as characters from "Journey to the West", sometimes to aid Kunio's crew, while other times becoming bosses, leading to humourous encounters that make the heart of River City!
Players start with the swift Sun Wukong, and later unlock the power-focused Zhu Bajie and the long-range Sha Wujing, granting 3 unique playstyles to mow down waves of enemies!
The game is slated for a June 4th release on Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Steam, retailing at $19.99 for the download version (though honestly I expected we'll see a limited physical release down the road.).
