Posted on 26 May 2023

July marks a tragic 4 year anniversary of the arson attack on Kyoto Animation studio, which saw 36 employees perish in the attack. President of the company Hideaki Hatta committed to creating a memorial shortly after the attack and today two sites have been announced.

The first will be erected in Uji City, the location of the company's headquarters, rather than on the site of the attack itself, which is a 10 minute walk from the proposed site. This memorial will be located in a public area to honour those who died and to show thanks for the support expressed worldwide.

The second memorial will be located on the site of the attack, but will be used for business purposes and not open to the public.

Among those who died in the attack were including The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya director Yasuhiro Takemoto, animator Yoshiji Kigami, chief animation director on the Free! franchise Futoshi Nishiya, Sound! Euphonium character designer Shouko Ikeda, and many more. 35 additional staff memebrs were seriously injured at the time of the attack.
