Magic Knight Rayearth to make a return for 30th anniversary

Posted on 03 Jul 2024

Clamp's popular 90's anime juggernaut, Magic Knight Rayearth, will benefit from a "new anime project" to celebrate the series 30th anniversary, making those of us who enjoyed the first run feel very old!

Given the popularity of the isekai genre right now, this seems timely. Originally running as a manga from 1993 to 1996, the story revolved around three schoolgirls who are transported to the world of Cephiro and granted the powers of fire (Hikaru Shidou), wind (Fuu Hououji) and Water (Umi Ryuuzaki). Able to use a rune with which they summon a mecha Rune God (or Mashin as per the show) - Hikaru recieves the titular Rayearth mashin, while Fuu gets the Windam leaving Uni with the Selece.

Blessed with Clamp's art style, some memorable music and some beautiful 90's animation, the anime adaptation became an international hit, with the 49 episode TV series in 1994 quickly being followed up with three 45-minute OVA's.

There's no news yet on the final format of the new animation project, whether it will be movies, OVA's (more likely ONA's these days) or remake of the series in the same vein as the recent Urusei Yatsura and upcoming Ranma projects.

More news as we get it!
