In case you missed it - and I've been working in Milan for a week so have been somewhat delayed in relaying this - Star Wars Visions Presents The Ninth Jedi mini series is set to air on August 5th over on Disney+.
The story was part of the original season of Star Wars Visions, an anthology of Star Wars stories written, produced and animated by studios all over the world to express a love for the long-lived IP.
The Ninth Jedi's first outing told the tale of Kara, the daughter of a lightsaber-smith who is pursued by dark forces on her way to deliver his work to what may be the very last Jedi in the galaxy. It's a wonderful tale full of twists and turns, beautifully animated by Japanese studio Production I.G. (Kaiju No.8, Ghost in the Shell) and largely considered to be one of the very best of the original stories. The central pillar of the tale is that the lightsabers she carries take on the colour of the user, so Sith being red and the rest being various shades of Jedi.
The trailer shows us a named threat in the original, Nawaam, who is aiming to bring peace to the galaxy and destroy the Jedi, a story we've seen before. I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed to see yet another Kyber Crystal powered superweapon destroying a planet, I just go numb at it these days as it's so played out and really makes the stakes feel smaller and not bigger. Once you've lost the population of an entire planet, what do a handful of other people matter, really?
Anyway, personal preferences aside, it looks absolutely gorgeous and we can judge the 8 episode outing on its own merits next month.
Stay tuned!
