UK and Japan agree historic trade deal

Posted on 11 Sep 2020

Today, the UK and Japan agreed a historic trade deal to be implemented on January 1st 2021. The deal, which the UK government expects to be worth an additional 15.2 billion in trade, far exceeds the EU/Japan trade deal in scope and benefits, leading to tariff-free trading in both directions on food, clothing and technology. Additionally, British nationals will be able to work in Japan within 90 days and bring their families for up to 5 years. This is a huge benefit for anyone wanting to work in the country, especially gaming and anime fans looking to pursue careers in Japan.

The deal makes sense given that Nissan has recently invested £400 million in it's Sunderland plant earlier this year, and the two countries align so closely on many political and cultural levels.

Whatever your views on Brexit as a whole, there's no doubt that the UK-Japan Free Trade Agreement is a historic and welcome event that brings the two countries closer together. As a lifelong fan of Japanese culture with a good number of Japanese friends, this is a very welcome development indeed.
