Viz media have announced at San Diego Comic Con (and via their twitter) that Rumiko Takahashi's much admired space-opera-comedy Urusei Yatsura is being re-released in Spring 2019, complete with new translation and released as 2 chapter compilations.
The series, which debuted in 1978 (the year I was born, blimey!), spanned 374 volumes and sold over 200 million copies. It was insanely popular, winning the Shogakukan award in 1980 and receiving an anime adaptation in 1981. Urusei Yatsura was a smash hit around the world, and was a featured show on the BBC's Japan week on BBC Choice, where the first two episodes were re-dubbed into English by, among others, Matt Lucas (Little Britain/Doctor Who) and Lauren Laverne (guitarist for Kenickie, presenter on 6 Music).
Takahashi, born in 1957, has a net worth of $76 million USD, and is one of the most successful female creatives in comics.
I had the distinct pleasure of creating a media DVD for MVM's release of the Urusei Yatsura movies with help from NEO's Gemma Cox many years ago, and I'm looking forward to revisiting Lum and friends very soon!
