Gundam SEED Aile Strike Metal Build Review

Gundam SEED Aile Strike Metal Build Review

Originally conceived by mechanical designer Kunio Okawara as the "hero" model for Bandai's Gundam SEED, the Strike Gundam, aka GAT-X105, was the most flexible of all the show's main Gundam units. Unlike the other models, which were designed for specific combat scenarios, the Strike could mount variable units for firepower, close-quarters combat and manoeuvrability. The latter was called the Aile Strike, and this Bandai Metal Build figure represents it with a slew of aesthetic updates.

For this release, Okawara revisits the original design alongside animator Satoshi Shigeta to update the Strike for the modern era, and what an incredible job they've done! The level of detail is superb, with logos, warnings and metal exo-skeleton parts for additional modules dotted around the torso. Additional detail has been added to every area of the figure, with vents, metal detailing and brass tubing scattered liberally around the Gundam to give it a real "workhorse" feel.

The real showstopper is the Aile pack itself - in all previous depictions both onscreen and in kit form, the top wings of the Aile module have been fixed in a glider-style position. With the addition of some hinges, the pack can now collapse into a "folded wing" configuration similar to the Freedom Gundam that Stike's pilot, Kira Yamato, would later adopt. This gives the Strike a brand-new silhouette, and it's stunning. Placing it next to the Metal Build Freedom Gundam in wings-down position makes the two mechs more complimentary than ever before. If you can't tell, I love this change - so simple, but so effective!

The figure itself feels very sturdy in-hand. Everything is stiff and holds a pose, but feels pliable enough that you aren't constantly fretting over breakages. The package includes 4 different hand-styles for both left and right hands, a rifle, 2 beam sabers and beam effects, a stand and an additional crest in case you lose or damage the original.

The details really make all the difference here, in terms of looks and construction. Spring-loaded calves allow for more bend in the knee, there are no screw-holes visible anywhere and there's something new to look at every time you pick it up. This is a thoroughly premium release and recommended if you're lucky enough to track one down.

Special thanks to Matthew Jang who was kind enough to trawl Korea trying to find this for me, and then paid for most of it as a gift - what an absolute gent! I'm very blessed to have such good friends who go the extra mile like this.
