Funimation acquire Manga Entertainment

Funimation acquire Manga Entertainment

Posted on 29 May 2019

Sony-owned Funimation announced today that they have acquired the UK distribution company, Manga Entertainment Limited.

Funimation is well-known for its translations of Japanese animated properties and was purchased by Sony in 2017 by the the Sony Pictures Television Networks division.

Sony can now add UK distributor Manga Entertainment to its list of properties, which is a big deal in the UK as Manga Entertainment pretty much kick-started the industry here back in 1991 with their release of Akira. Following the positive reaction to the film, they followed up with more hyper-violent animated content such as Fist of the North Star and Guyver, leading to some interesting headlines!

Over the years, Manga Entertainment evolved into the home of long-running and popular Shonen shows such as Naruto and Bleach.

Manga Additions to the FunimationNow service

The merger means that many of Manga Entertainment's licenses will be added to FunimationNow, including A Certain Magical Index, Wolf Children and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence among others, with many more titles to be announced. This is great news for existing subscribers who now have slew of new and high quality titles being added free of charge.

The likely impact on the UK market:

With Manga Entertainment now under their belt, Sony has a direct line of distribution to the UK market, explaining their recent move to pull Funimation-dubbed and subbed content from MVM and Anime Ltd. This left Anime Ltd with only 3 titles to announce at their MCM Expo appearance last weekend, all Gundam related holdovers from a previous deal. They also announced two new soundtrack acquisitions, and this may be a market they now pursue more aggressively.

MVM's catalogue is sourced almost entirely from other vendors, they will be least affected by the announcement and were able to show 10 new licenses at the show, which itself followed on from 6 announced the month before. These included additions to the Fate series, a much-anticipated Blu Ray release for Garden of Sinners and some new fan favourites such as Cells at Work and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.
