Mastermind Creations have made a name for themselves bringing IDW's original Transformer designs to life, but with their latest line, they're looking to make some changes. In this case, it's a gender-swapped Tarn, the lethal antagonist leading the Decepticon Justice Division that menaces the crew of the Lost Light throughout the More Than Meets The Eye series.

Having already provided a full set of DJD members with an impressive level of accuracy and engineering, this fembot-fatale follows a lot of Tarn's design cues while retaining a disctinct style and personality of her own.

She's taller than you might think, standing an intimidating 24cm if you include her shoulder pouldrons, with good tolerences and a nice bit of die-cast heft to help with the balance. Like MMC's previous release, Optus Pexus, a high degree of posability has been created thanks to lots of double-joints, a ball joint & swivel in the waist, ankle tilts, butterfly joints in the shoulders and an impressive range of movement on the head. All of this makes her a very expressive figure that's a lot of fun to play with and pose.

Love the lipstick

She has the two required accessories the character needs - a removable face mask and a (by Tarn standards) petite dual Fusion-Cannon which can be placed on either arm.

The colour palette of black, purple and gold looks stunning, very much the Decepticon colour-palette with subtle accents to bring out the details. The sculpt itself has plenty of panel-lines, vents and rivets to make her feel industrial and provide interest - subsequently the camera loves her.

Transformation to tank mode is a bit fiddly, but a few goes and it becomes quite intuitive. The end result is your usual "future-tank" affiar, with the legs creating a base for the fusion cannon to sit in, the handy waist articulation driving the turret rotation. The hands, with their individual fingers, do feel a bit exposed, and I'm not sure they'll hold up to a lot of rough play, so I'd advise beng extra careful with this area of the 'bot.

It's a tank thing.

If there are any drawbacks to the figure, they're few and far between. There's the fingers of course, they feel very delicate and I winced a few times during transformation and even just posing her. It also makes her hands pretty monstrous, though that's in keeping with the intimidating style of the character.  Possibly the biggest issue is availability - the figure was only sold on the Planet Steel Express website, and MMC completely underestimated demand, seeing it sell out quickly. New versions with different colour schemes are planned in future, possibly as convention exclusives, but essentially the figure will be making a return, and I highly recommend you seek one out when it does.
